The 2025 federal budget and Windows 11 walk into a bar

The 2025 federal budget and Windows 11 walk into a bar…

It is rare for us to feature economic news, but in 2025 two separate events could have a significant financial impact on your business.

1. Support for Windows 10 ends

On 14 October 2025 Microsoft will no longer provide any support for Windows 10. Effective from that date, there will be no further software updates, tech support, or security updates.

Its cyber security and functionality will start to decay, and Microsoft will wash their hands of any responsibility. You are on your own.

Ordinarily that would be fine. Just upgrade to Windows 11, adjust to it, and away you go. Except that a considerable number of devices will not be able to handle Windows 11.

As a rough rule of thumb, you will need to replace any device bought before 2019.

Otherwise, the performance of those laptops and desktops will degrade.

Impact on your business applications

It is not just Windows 10 that will be affected.

If you are still using it after the 14th of October, then a number of your business and industry-specific applications could need updating.

More performance and security issues.

2. The small business instant asset write-off plummets

A minor detail in the federal budget is that the $20,000 instant asset write-down for small businesses ends on 30 June 2025.

After that it plunges back to $1,000 – barely enough to cover a new laptop.

So, if you have yet to upgrade to Windows 11, mark this on your calendar.

If you need new devices to handle Windows 11, we recommend you buy them before 30 June.

However, it would be worth consulting your accountant first.
