Peter’s* heart sank. An email from his boss – one short sentence: “What money transfer?

His boss had gone to Melbourne for a work function. He had emailed Peter that he wanted $20,000 transferred into his account; to buy a piece of equipment.

Nothing unusual, and who challenges their boss?

It turned out to be an elaborate fraud.

The hacker had hijacked his boss’s email – and accessed other business data – to give credibility to the request.

The origin of the attack was later tracked to a click on an email by a person in another department. Oblivious to the fact that they had let in a cyber-stalker, waiting to pounce months later.

Your people want to do the right thing, but it’s all too easy to get caught up in busyness.

Emails flood their inboxes, amidst the relentless drive for productivity.
